Goal: Protect yourself from catastrophic loss while positioning yourself to capture massive, unexpected wins in any domain of life.
Mental Model: The Barbell Strategy — Combine extreme safety with small, aggressive bets to benefit from uncertainty instead of being destroyed by it.
To thrive in an unpredictable world, you need to be part boring accountant, part crazy rock star.

Avoid the Middle
The barbell works by putting weight on the two extremes and nothing in the center.
Medium-risk approaches look reasonable but almost always hide deadly vulnerabilities. They crumble under rare, high-impact Black Swan Events because prediction errors are inevitable.
Black Swans are rare, unpredictable events with massive impact.
e.g., the 2008 financial crisis, COVID-19 pandemic, 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Real-World Examples of the Barbell Strategy
Finance: 90% ultra-safe assets + 10% moonshot bets (options, startups). Max loss is known and small; gains can be life-changing.
Career/Creative: Keep a stable job for survival. Use the rest for uncompromising, high-stakes work (the “accountant and rock star” model).
Health: Skip moderate cardio. Do short, brutal sprints or heavy lifts + long periods of lazy walking. Our ancestors lived this way.
Asymmetry Is Everything
Your 10% aggressive bets require asymmetry: upside far larger than downside.
Ancient philosopher Thales paid a small fee for the right (but not obligation) to use a farmer’s olive presses if the harvest was huge that year. Tiny loss, enormous potential profit — the first recorded purchase of an option.
This is why optionality beats intelligence. You don’t need to predict the future perfectly. Just create bets where one big win covers many small losses.
Clip the Downside
If a gambler loses all their money in a single bad bet, it doesn't matter how much they could have won later; they have no money left; they are out of the game. So, how do we protect against this?
As Elon Musk says, “Failure is irrelevant unless it is catastrophic.”
If a single loss takes you out of the game, future upside doesn’t matter. Redundancy adds insurance against the unknown. Our bodies are living proof of this. We have two eyes, two ears, and two kidneys, though we can live with one.
Tinkering > Planning
The practical tool is tinkering — small, cheap experiments. Try many things. Most fail cheaply. One success will pay for all the losers, and profit still! This is assuming your bet follows the rule of asymmetry discussed previously.
This is how evolution works, how great inventions emerge, and how venture capital and book publishing thrive even with far more losers than winners.
Bottom line: The barbell strategy lets you thrive on volatility without needing to perfectly understand or predict it.
